Managing Director, Ian Glen, explains the importance of Graduates and why he’s decided to cancel their student loan repayments.

15 August 1994.  I joined 288 Group straight out of University.  Today I am Managing Director responsible for our Collectibles Division worth almost £40m and employing 170 staff.

Managing Director Ian Glen celebrates 25 Years of Graduate Recruitment and an end to Student Loan Repayments with first-ever Graduate Trainee, Emma Tindall and more recent graduates, James Lomax and Sarah Shenton.

I was our third Graduate Trainee.  Our first, Emma Bowles – now Tindall, joined the year before and, this year celebrates her 25th Anniversary with 288 Group, now heading up User Experience for our Sitters business – a job that didn’t even exist when she sat down at her desk for first time in 1993.

Marketing is right at the centre of our business, employing a team of 30.  Most joined as Graduates, going on to complete well-respected Institute of Digital & Direct Marketing’s Professional Diploma as part of an extensive 2-year on-the-job training and development programme.  And it has worked really well over the years – our Heads of Digital Marketing and Product Development both joined as graduates.  Another is responsible for the launch of our new Collectology business.

Of course, not every Graduate has stayed at 288 Group.  Many have gone on to senior roles in household names like Royal Mail, the RSPB, Charles Tyrwhitt and Blue Square.

But what has also become clear is that it’s harder and harder to get a great start in life – even with a good degree.  Students leave university £30,000 debt in teaching fees alone and enter a world where the aspiration of buying their first home is increasingly beyond many – even on the £30,000+ salary they can expect to command after their first two years.

That’s why we’ve chosen to mark 25 Years of Graduate Recruitment with a special offer to all of our current Graduate Trainees and any new ones who join us.  We’ll cover your Student Loan Repayments for your first 5 years working with us.

Of course, that’s on top of what we already think is a pretty good package that includes:

  • On target salary of £30,000 + bonus after 2 years (starting salary £22k + bonus)
  • £5,000 tailored personal training allowance, including the IDM Professional Diploma
  • 25 Days’ Paid Holiday PLUS your birthday off
  • Subsidised Gym Membership
  • Social events including fantastic Summer and Christmas Parties

I only hope that there is still an open and academically rigorous University system in place in 25 years’ time – so we can mark 50 Years’ of Graduate Recruitment.
